Mayday show at the Berean

I’m playing a full set of music this Saturday, June 26th at the Berean Institute. The liberti arts collective is hosting their Mayday show. What is this, you may ask? A bunch of us created pieces of art every day in May (or tried to). On Saturday we unveil the fruit of our labors! I won’t have the band with me but I’ll be playing electric guitar, Jeff Buckley-live-at-Sine style.

Food, wine, art, peeps.

April Update

I played rock and roll this past weekend in Lancaster, PA. The guys (and girls)  and I put together a six-song set and performed for the crowd at the Elks Lodge hosted by The Row House. Headlining the show was the Brooklyn family-friendly sacred-folk band The Welcome Wagon (who did not play rock and roll),  friends of my family from years past. It was fantastic to play music again after about a six-month hiatus of not playing regular shows. The Welcome Wagon’s set made me feel like I was hanging out in my living room or singing at church. They were intimate, endearing and there were kids running around and dancing. It was a wonderful vibe and I wish more shows didn’t have to be so “cool.”

Here are a couple photos of the show taken by my soon-to-be brother-in-law Caleb Lewis:

Backtrack

I wrote a song over the weekend. Here’s a rough demo of it and lyrics.

backtrack

when you walk again
when you sign again
silent moment, off duty

when you wake again
if you shake again
call up, show off
do not wait for it

breathe in, backtrack
breathe out, levitate the fear
breathe in, backtrack

bring it to light again
open the book again
story undone
pages turning

breathe in, backtrack
breathe out, i imitate you
breathe in, backtrack

rip out the walls again
follow the prison break
new hole in the wall

breathe in, backtrack
breathe out, i imitate you
breathe in, backtrack

New Year’s Evolutions

Why Hello Everybuddys,

Happy New Year’s to you.  I hope you saw the Mummer’s parade in Philly because I didn’t see any of it and I live for large events featuring live music, cityscapes, revelry and people that look like this:

Instead, on New Year’s Day, I lagged around, a little droopy, knowing that my lovely vacation and time off was drawing to a close. I also have dived headfirst into the world of Lewis’ Space Trilogy, with its unparalleled scope of the world’s reality, insight into human nature and odd ugly covers.

Making Spirits Bright

Here are some photos taken by Drew Shipe from the liberti Arts Collective show which was held in heart of the Christmas season on December 11th. Jon Porter played a short but substantial set of beautiful arrangements. I played  original music and some Christmas standards alongside Steve Robbins and Joyce Ma, two talented Philly musicians.

At the end everyone joined voices, instruments, feet and bells on bobtail ring for a twinkling, rollicking sing-a-long.

And of course there was original art making its dwelling on the walls around us. Many thanks to the artists who contributed their talents! It was the highlight of my Christmas season!

December is here!

The last few weeks have been difficult. I have looked back over this fall of 2010, even since I last blogged, and realized that it is hard to make or mark “progress” in music-making. Am I ever where I was hoping to be? Well, not really. But usually it is because I have found myself somewhere else, doing something else I could not have imagined.  So…what really has been going on? Here are a few things:

I have been writing and compiling sketches to form new songs.

I have been sharing ideas and playing music with fellow songwriter Phil Marsalona.

The liberti Arts Collective took off the ground with our first house show on November 6th. We featured the stunning work of 10 different photographers. Lion Versus also played their jangle of what I have now deemed SpanishMoss/New Orlean/Underground Railroad/Old World folk. They delighted many ears. Here are some photos from the show.

I have been leading worship music regularly at liberti Fairmount, the church community of which I am a member.

I have been in the beginning stages of planning a live concert of my Holy Week songs which I wrote last Easter season.

But the very immediate upcoming event is next week’s 2nd liberti Arts Collective house show, the Christmas edition! We’re featuring more work by liberti artists within the theme of Light.

I will be playing Christmas tunes and original material with Phil. Also on the bill is Jonathan Porter, playing his own arrangements of Christmas standards. Then we’ll have a sing-a-long in which everyone can participate in a few carols. I hope you’ll choose to stop by at some point during the evening!

Details: Saturday, December 11th, 7pm-10pm
3036 Baltz St. Philadelphia

Come enjoy art, music and food!

Row House Show in Lancaster

Well, it was a cozy, elephanty time at the Row House this past Saturday. Ross and I played about a 15-song set with an interlude for delicious snacks! Claire joined me in singing on about half of the songs, and my sis Eliza also made an appearance on BGVs.

Thanks to everyone who was there!! I was excited to reconnect with those of you who I have not seen for some time. And it was good to meet new friends.

Here’s me at the end of the show looking disheveled but happy!

Please check out The Row House and its innumerable awesome events which are to come! There’s something exciting happening every two weeks.

Also, I performed a few songs which I had just  written only in the last week. One was called “Unicorn” and another was called “Your Birthday,” a song for my husband Ben. Though it is not the smoothest recording, here is “Your Birthday” as performed on Saturday night. I hope you like it. The lyrics are below. Until next time!…

Your birthday

Breathe upon my skin
the earth could maybe send
a tremor for our love
together, all is right
i sleep and wake with you
i sleep and wake with you

for years our minds weren’t made
but i never let you go
i want to be with you

i want to be with you

words with tangible form
work to keep us from harm

sometimes i don’t know how we got here
sometimes i need a signal flare

sometimes all i need is to kiss you

sometimes i just don’t know how we’re here

it could have gone
any other way
after all it was hard
like running a race
underwater
underwater

sometimes i don’t know how we got here
sometimes i need a signal flare
sometimes all i need is to kiss you
sometimes i just don’t know how we’re here

ooo- ooo -oo – oo
